When I was in London, I found myself continually chanting the popular nursery rhyme- “Rain rain go away. Come again another day.” It rained most of the time.
Luckily, there were many places to explore indoors. While many loyal British subjects withstood overcast skies and frequent rain drops to watch the Diamond Jubilee parade, we spent an entire afternoon at the Churchill War Rooms and Churchill Museum.
I was instantly engaged in both parts of this educational museum. The easy to follow numbered audio guide provided supplementary information to the posted signs.
Touring the actual War Rooms took me back to life in the 1940s. The words of the staff members along with the experience of walking through the cramped underground bunker, provided an authentic experience that few museums are able to replicate.
I was easily able to visualize the inhospitable conditions of the staff that lived underground.
It was fascinating to read about the brave women who were part of the team and the role that they played in the war effort.
Walking through the corridors, I experienced the tight and confining living conditions. Some accommodations were more spacious than others.
The work areas were only slightly larger than the sleeping quarters.
Displays also remind visitors of what was available in the 1940s. Kitchen appliances and communication equipment were just a few examples.
In addition to the restoration of the actual War Rooms, the museum included an enormous room that focused on Churchill’s life. The room was divided into 5 areas- his youth, early political career, years in the wilderness, World War II years, and Post war years. Artifacts, interactive electronic displays, videos, and the audio guide provided the facts.
If you don’t like history, you’ll probably walk through quickly. However, if you’re intrigued by Churchill, world leaders, politics, the military, or history in general, you’ll easily spend hours absorbing as much as possible.
